Maori have a long tradition of natural holistic health practices that have been handed down through the generations and are now being received by a worldwide culture interested in health, wellness and natural medicine.

The waters and clays of Wairakei were highly valued by Maori for their healing powers and therapeutic benefits. At the turn of the last century, travelers world wide came by train, by horse or stagecoach to ‘take the waters’, testifying to its ‘remarkable curative properties’.

Visitors can bathe in a series of hot thermal pools rich in minerals, uniquely situated below magnificent silica terraces that provide a ‘feel back in time’ sensation, leaving you warm long after you have left the water.

Significant natural thermal springs; mud and silica waters found in geothermal areas have been used for hundreds of years by Maori for healing and wellness. Specific sites were often located in beautiful landscapes, at the junction of rivers and streams, on the shores of pristine lakes and below magnificent silica terraces.

At Wairakei Terraces, pools of varying temperatures between have been strategically positioned below the silica terraces and waterfall, taking full advantage of the geothermal water flow that is drawn to the earth’s surface from 1.5 kilometres underground.

Are you in need of relaxation? This is the place to go. Small but good spa area with different pools and temperatures. You can stay all day long for a good price. Good value for money.

Great show, great guide, but unfortunately went when a Hungarian tour group also went - ended up being one of 4 english speaking people in the group, so the tour guide was only speaking to the translator. Also show at the end was amazing, but again Hungarians ruined it by having to leave early - so the show was cut short for them. Was also a little disappointed that the fact that the terraces weren't the original, naturally formed ones wasn't advertised

Excellent tour around the terraces + a good insight into the Maori culture. Followed by a delicious Hangi cooked meal. Great night out.

Hangi and tour - Hangi was excellent (courtesy bus took ages to get there so we were late). Tour and guide were very interesting. Drinks are extra $$ which is disappointing when you pay money for the package. We went back the next day to seeing it during the day - beautiful.
