There are spaces for non-self-contained camping on either side of the train platform, between the signposted arrows on site. Up to 7 nights in any 30 day period. There are no other spaces for non-self-contained campers in the town and there is an enforcement service in place if camping occurs outside of the identified non-self-contained area.
There is also a commercial camping facility available at the northern end of the Lumsden township if the non-self-contained area is full. Another option up the road at the Lodge and Holiday Park in Athol.
Self-contained camping is permitted in the town in any public carpark, and the toilet car park is recommended. Up to 3 nights in any 30 day period for self-contained.
Any person found to be camping in a tent, car or non-self-contained vehicle outside the designated parking area is liable to receive a $200 infringement fee, so all visitors are encouraged to ensure that they camp in the designated parks
The Northern Southland Community Pool is now open for the season (11/11/17 until March 2018). Key is $5 per person plus a $20 bond which you can get from the Four Square. Not available to the public during school hours and some evenings but all those details at the Four Square. Holidays start 15th Dec. Clean showers plus a place to charge your mobile phone will be installed very soon. Lovely community pool :)
This is a great place for a swim and shower in Lumsden.

One of the best places we've stayed! You can park anywhere in the carpark so we parked by the park for something a bit prettier. Theres a sink to wash your dishes, heaps of toilets, free wifi from the library across the road which reached our car! Highly recommend the cafe Route 6 across the road, and also going to the 4sq and asking about the swimming pool! For $5 each we had the town pool all to ourselves for a couple hours including free hot showers! Best freedom camping town ever!!
Literally just a car park but toilets are nice. Dish washing facility is also good.
Really quiet so it’s not bad.
The reviews say it all. Awesome free spot to stay for a night, facilities are great. Can get up and leave whenever you are ready in the morning. Two cafes for coffee across the road. Recommend

Fantastic place to stay. Clean bathroom facilities, cool open train museum, dish washing and fresh water, safe and welcoming. Highly recommend
Awesome site to stay overnight for free. Clean toilets, soap, toiletpaper and nice sinks. There are sheltered picnic tables to cook your own meal and if you haven’t done your groceries......the 4Square is a stone throw away, just the other side of the road.
Or grap a pizza, is just next door! Our kids loved the big playground and scooter ramp for their stunts. There are also sinks to wash your dishes, drinking water and information boards to enjoy the heritage of the trainstation. The holiday parks would be jealous of these faclilities, and it is all for free! Would visit again! Highly recommended!!
Great place to stay for free!
Toilets - 10/10 supper clean
Have a Place to wash dishes and to refill your water bottles
Some tables and a playground for kids
Supermarket on the other side of the road
Location: it’s okay, it’s a parkingpark and there is not much to do
Insects: nothing we found
Wc’s: very well and clean
Douche: no douche
It was nice to stand here. It is good for one night to stand here.
Brilliant overnighter. Thank you Lumsden. It has a wash up area, benches undercover, good clean toilets. It just lacks a shower.
PLEASE PUT A DONATION in the box near the sinks.
The best place, there is no view or anything, but clean bathrooms with 4 cubicles, plenty of room, rubbish bins, historical trains and wifi. Even laundry maschine on the street. Thank you for great free spot!
Lovely community, amazing facilities & free!! Our first time freedom camping and I can honestly say that it rivalled some of the $15 campsites we’ve stayed in. Toilets spotless, designated area & sink for washing up, lots of bins for rubbish, supermarket opposite and lovely cafe / bakery (Bafe - deffo try the doughnuts!!)
Amazing place for freedom campers!
It's great for what it is (a free car park with toilets) but at the end of the day it is just a car park!
There's a playground nearby.
Recommend going to the Bafé down the road for coffee, breakfast, lunch or any other pastry needs you have!
Cost (2p, non-powered): $0
Location: Small town, not unpleasant
Really great little site; stopped here twice this month. First night was chill; second night happened to be completely full, with some noisy campers talking loudly past midnight...really a shame, and disrespectful! But the facilities here are great and I was happy to leave a donation.
