Tread Routes provide shuttles, guiding, bike hire, and package trips on the largest range of trails and offers you the most options.
We are the one stop shop for your mountain biking adventure. Whether you are looking for a simple shuttle to the trail, or a full guided experience, we are the local experts who know the trails best. Hire a bike from us, or bring your own and rest assured that your bike will be in the best of care in our enclosed trailer with custom bike rack.
We also provide multi-day tours throughout the North Island bringing you all the best rides in one customizable package.
We have expert trail knowledge and all the equipment to make the logistics easy. Choose any or all of our services to build your custom experience. Ask us what works best for each trail.
We supply high quality hard tail and dual suspension mountain bikes. Hire bikes come with helmets and a basic repair kit.

Great Lake Trail • 1 day package • Grade 3 • Distance 30km :
You can be pick up at your accommodation in Taupo or you can meet our shuttle at the village of Kinloch (20 min from Taupo) in the morning. From Kinloch you will be shuttled to the start of the Great Lake Trail at Waihaha, where you will have a briefing about the trai,l and your hire bikes (if applicable). The guided ride will take you on renowned Great Lake Trail, famed as the "best Grade 3 trail in NZ". The trail is all Grade 3 purpose built singletrack that follows the Waihaha River Gorge and Taupo's lakeside cliffs. This remote trail is set in native bush and boats amazing views of the Waihaha river, waterfalls, and of course the Great Lake Taupo. On a fine day you can clearly see the snow capped volcanoes of the Tongariro National Park across the lake. The ride ends at a remote beach in the Western Bay where you can enjoy a swim in Lake Taupo's crystal clear waters. From this idyllic spot you will then board a boat that will transfer you back to Kinloch. Enjoy a well earned coffee or meal on the beach to finish off the day. Tread Routes will then shuttle you back to your accommodation in Taupo if requested.

Year round operation. Remember Taupo's mountain bike trails are a great place to ride in winter too. Our free draining pumice soil in this volcanic area allows the trails to dry out very quickly compared to many other places in New Zealand. |

Excellent, professional service. Did the Great Lakes cycle ways over 2 days. Ted has done all the trails himself so knows what he's talking about. Would definitely use this company again.

A group of 8 of us did the two day Timber Trail ride with Ted from Tread Routes. Ted's professionalism and organisational skills were second to none. The ride is fantastic and the scenery spectacular. Not all of the group were cyclists and some found it a bit more challenging than others but they all thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Ted provided lots of encouragement and scheduled lots of breaks so we could take in the scenery and the information boards. We stayed at Black Fern Lodge in The Forge which was great. Maria from Black Fern provided all the meals too which were fantastic. All round this trip was very memorable and a great way to spend some quality time with great friends. I'd do it all again in a heartbeat. Thanks Ted - you were awesome : )

We recently spent a week in beautiful Lake Taupo. The purpose of the trip was to spend 4 days Mountain Bike Riding. We were fortunate enough to get hooked up with Ted, Erin and the team at Tread Routes.
They took all 19 riders, each with varying experience and skill and turned 4 days riding into such an enjoyable experience. We cycled around 158km's over 4 days and were guided by the Tread Routes team which enhanced the experience.
Highlights included the Timber Trail ride which included a night out camping in between 2 days riding and the Great Lake trails which highlighted the beauty of Lake Taupo.
If we are to do this gain, which is more than likely, we will be going back to the Tread Routes team to ensure our experience is what we are after.

Ted, Erin, Trev and the team at Tread Routes are exceptional at delivering a truly outstanding MTB experience on the stunning trails of Lake Taupo. Our group of 19 was entertained by their knowledge of the trails and the way they organised/lead us each day as guides, hosts and ,most importantly by the end, as friends. Get on board, Tread Routes are outstanding.

Ted, Erin and crew did a great job for our group. We were concerned with a big group, over 20, but it all went like clockwork. Service with a smile. Nothing was too much trouble and everything was done with a genuine desire to make our experience a memorable and trouble free one - and it was!
The information was accurate, we were given options, the equipment was great - and any hiccups with our bikes were handled in a jiffy.
A wonderful experience for us all - made possible by the wonderful Tread Routes team. We would highly recommend them for anyone serious about enjoying their mountain bike stay in New Zealand!!
