Poutuia Park Pukehina has a new sign saying overnight parking only between half hour after sunset until half hour before sunrise. Be aware you will get fined even if you dont see this sign on fence.
Each camping location is approved by a regional council in NZ. So if it shows on the map, you’re allowed to stay.

Great spot next to the beach.
+ great sea view
+ very friendly local people around
+ at daytime: lifeguards at the beach nearby
+ free, clean toilets open all day/night
+ good fish and chips about 2km down the street (by the way: there is another free camping just on the other side of the restaurant for self contained motorhomes, also with a public toilet!)

It's a nice spot but very cramped and it feels quite public. You wouldn't want more than 2 campers here! If you want to freedom camp then I would recommend you take the 2 minute drive down to Dotterel Point. Lots more room to move and just as scenic.
