Paku Hill is an exposed dome of rhyolite lava that was formerly buried under older, now eroded deposits. It was once an island, but has now been joined to the mainland by a sand strip. There are extensive views of Tairua estuary, which is a drowned river valley, and the central ranges beyond.
From Tairua town center follow Manaia Road for 1.2 km and turn right into Paku Drive. After 1.9 km veer sharp left and turn right into Tirinui Crescent. The start of the track is signposted from the end of the crescent, 0.2 km further on.
Alternatively, if travelling to Tairua from the north, turn left into Ocean Beach Road before the one-lane bridge and continue 1.5 km before joining Paku Drive.
The track is well-formed but steep and rocky in places. It zigzags its way up to the trig at the summit.

Yeah great view from the summit.
Don’t be fooled, heaps of steps to the top.
Well worth it, even for someone as unfit as me. Savour the moment

Nice view of the harbour and the beaches, it is nice to read about the settler history on the way up.

Easy walk for half an hour. The track is sometimes not easy to find, but it is worth it. The views from the top is great.

From the carpark the walk is quite hard to find (sign small), nevertheless after one found the track and made it to the top (track itself is good!) the view is amazing, very nice sign at the top of the mountain explaining the views/island names.

Quick hike, not difficult though there is an incline. Great view! You can see the ocean, harbours and both cities. It only took us 15-20 minutes too.
