The crash of foaming water echoes around the valley and mixes with the singing of tui and the clicking of cicadas. The orchestra of Nature verges on the perfect chorus.
Humboldt Falls are signposted on the right, 15.5 km down Lower Hollyford Road near the roadend and start of the Hollyford Track. There’s a parking area with shelter opposite the start of the track.
The metalled track winds steadily up to the viewing point a little above the valley and falls. A bench is placed in view of the falls. Worth a linger.
The falls drop around 250 metres in three tiers, with a smaller waterfall to the south. They emanate from the Humboldt Mountains.
On the way to Humboldt Falls, it’s a must to stop at Gunns Camp and the Hollyford Museum, owned by Murray Gunn, son of Davey Gunn, runholder in the Hollyford Valley. As well as a shop, the Hollyford Museum houses a collection of artefacts from the Hollyford Valley. These date from the first settler days at Jamestown in the late 1800s to remnants of the Milford Road construction. Many snippets of local history are displayed on the walls, with an evocative collection of black and white photos.

Worth a detour off the Milford Rd. Nice walk up the hill rewarded with a good view of the falls. View from the lookout is getting a little obstructed by trees so might be time for a little pruning.

Nice, but don't bother with the lookout 5/10, if you want to get up closer - follow the river for a decent view!
