Ohinemutu Village was the region's original Ngati Whakaue settlement. The location was chosen for its lakeside setting and the availability of geothermal energy for cooking, bathing and heating. Before Europeans, Ohinemutu was the main centre for the Rotorua Lake region, visitors and food arrived at this bustling settlement before going on to the surrounding villages.
Visitors are welcome to explore the area on foot, taking care to treat sacred places with respect.

This very little Maori place is free to visit. There is not really anything special. All you can see is a couple of Maori buildings and some thermal activity (smoking water) nearby.

Maybe we arrived late? I honestly don't know but it felt we were driving through some normal neighborhood.

Didn't do the village tour, but did visit St Faith's in the village. It has an amazing engraved glass window that depicts Jesus as a Maori walking on the water.
The church is full of Maori carvings.
Well worth a look.

Very interesting village. Staff at information office and in gift shops went the extra mile to explain a little of the history of the village, the three churches, their culture, lovely people.
