Orokawa Bay

Information

approx 4 km return | 1½ hours return

This colourful coastline walk leads to a secluded, pohutukawa-fringed beach. Rocky headlands and fern-dominated bush accompany the dramatic coastal views. Not a safe beach for swimming unfortunately.

Access

The start of the track is signposted from the northern end of Waihi Beach.

Track

To avoid wet feet at the start of the track you may have to dodge the breakers.

The track is wide and, for the most part, even. Where the track forks, follow the arrows. There are some uphill sections where the track rises over headlands.

There is a 45-minute-return detour to the William Wright Falls from Orokawa Bay. The track crosses the narrow Orokawa Stream on numerous occasions, often with convenient stepping stones.

Toilets are provided behind Orokawa Bay.

This track can be extended to form a longer walk to Homunga Bay.

Geology

The William Wright Falls are 28-metres-high and cascade scenically in two stages.
