Have been coming here for years as a favourite place to camp. The river water is clean and safe to drink. Beware for biting sand-flies which tend to love ankles but insect repellent deals with this. The site is maintained jointly by local iwi and doc as part of the local Tuhoe Waitangi settlement. Recent work around the site has recovered the second composting toilet from overgrown scrub. The shelter is great for preparing food especially if wet. Great trout fishing and a favourite place for the locals to come for a swim in the swimming hole. There are concrete pads for making a campfire for toasting marshmallows and plenty of firewood can be found from remnants of recent felling operations. On a good nigh the call of wild kiwi can be heard nearby and occasionally bats can be spotted feeding on dusk. The area has a large presence of the local gang mongrel mob whose can appear at the site at anytime and although their presence can be visually intimidating they tend to keep to themselves.

Awesome place! We stayed there only one night, couldn't find how to pay though. Beautiful views on the river and waterfall. There's no hot water or shower, however the site is well maintained.

We were the only one here, with horses walking around the site. There was no sign at the campground (there is on the road), or a box to pay, however things did look maintained so we decided to stay anyway. Official status is unclear to me. Didn't find a water tap, we loved the spot with view on the waterfall.

Great campsite on the river with a great waterfall. And if it’s raining like it was for us for 2 days you can use a great shelter well maintained by the locals.

Nice place, excellent view! $7 per night, great walks in the area. No showers or hot water, but definitely worth it!
