Camping NZ NEW

Welcome to New Zealand's most comprehensive database of freely available camping information. This is the only travel map of its kind in NZ.

Time: 8-9 hr or shorter walks from 20 min to 2 hr

The Kaituna Track is the perfect walk for families, and people keen on experiencing New Zealand's native forest. This place has had a lot of possum control over the past few years and as a result the native birds such as wood pigeons, tuis and fantails are once again becoming very abundant.

You can follow the track through to the Westhaven Inlet on the West Coast (an 8 hour tramp) but most people prefer to walk only to the site of the old Kaituna gold workings - lots of reminants are still there (20mins) or on to the river forks - an easy 3 hour return mission.

Good and challenging track that takes you through forest and open views close to Knuckle Hill. Steep first few hours, well marked route.

Nice walk with remnants of historic gold mining operations to check out.
