Nau mai, haere mai

I'm Marios, delivering the best of Aotearoa's nature walks to your device.

I've personally walked hundreds of New Zealand's tracks and spent months in libraries uncovering interesting information on New Zealand/Aotearoa. And you'll find a slice of that research on this page - enjoy!

Hot, hot, Tokaanu Hotpools

600 m return | 20 minutes return

Next to the Tokaanu Hotpools lies this little walk. Make sure to watch your kids and stick to the track, as the accidental slip into the boiling hot water would not lead to a good outcome! If you are keen to get into the full swing of things cut up some root veges and stick them into one of the metal racks you should find lying next to the pools - throw a damp sack over your food, cruise next door for a soak in the hot pools, or a quick trout fish in the Tongariro River. Then come back in about two hours and voila you will have some yummy steamed veges (unless someone has nicked them.....). This is called a poia - ohhh yeah.

From Tokaanu, the thermal pools are signposted off SH41 Cross the bridge by the entrance to the thermal pools and the track is signposted to the left.

The metalled track loops around many of the springs originally used by Maori. Fences are there to stop you falling into the scalding water, boiling mud and steaming swamps.

Watch the kids closely! They don't taste too good boiled!

Polynesian History

Local Maori Tribe Ngati Kurauia have used the pools since the 16 Century for bathing, healing and relaxing. Today, you can continue the tradition.

Nice walking track - gives a good impression of thermal activity, a bit short, too few information on geology and the history of the area.
