I didn’t get to go on the trip due to coronavirus. Despite an initial delay in communication with the company due to the pandemic, they have since restored my faith that they do care for their customers.
We arrived early in Auckland and were picked up at the airport . We were the first motorhome hirers on sight and expected to do the required paperwork and be on our way. We had agreed an insurance package but the woman serving us insisted we upgrade. This went on until I became uncomfortable and agreed the extra insurance . We then discovered that we had not been booked on the inter islander ferry that we had paid for in their package and we were not booked into the lounge experience on board , again paid for . There was then confusion over the vehicle , it was certainly not the top of the range that the 21 day hire at over $10,000 NZ had suggested . Other people were then arriving to collect their vehicles , there were only two people on duty and things became stretched to say the least ! There were four of us be we were only given 4 small towels , when we asked for more , we were told to buy some ! Later that evening when making the beds up we found that we had been given one single blanket for each of the two double beds !
By the second day there was a bad smell so we went to the dump station and did the necessary . The smell still lingered so we did it again, this time flushing water in to clear the grey water tank which had clearly not been serviced for some time. Then the bed wouldn't work and each day required one of us to crawl under it and push it back up. Then the gas stopped working so we replaced the bottle and it still didn't work , we then found that the regulator was faulty . Then the exterior step stopped working and was done manually each day. Then the water pump started playing up and finally packed up altogether on our last week. We complained and were allowed one night at a camp site on them ! The oven and the grill were filthy, how could you miss that ?
On the plus side the vehicle was reliable and when we returned it to the Christchurch branch we were greeted with a friendly professional outfit, unlike Auckland !
Very good people to work with. The camper was clean and fairy new. We had a problem with the refrigerator while on the road and the Wilderness team was quick to get service for us as we traveled. My only critical point is that the kitchen could have been better equipped. We had to buy a few basic kitchen tools on the road. No big deal but it could have been better equipped. The vehicle itself worked great. We would not hesitate to recommend Wilderness to friends or to use them again on our next trip to NZ.
Great from start to finish. Booking on line they were helpful and friendly. Super efficient and friendly on arrival. Helped us organize an itinerary. Motorhome worked perfectly with no issues at all. Drop off was pleasant and easy
We booked a Burstner Motorhome with Wilderness for our two month “holiday of a lifetime” tour of New Zealand.
First what’s been good. The Frenzy Book has been invaluable. Staff are always pleasant and friendly. When we have raised problems, staff have responded quickly. The Motorhome is modern.
What’s not been good. The Motorhome was poorly prepared for rental. Here’s the list:- The grey water tank emitted a foul smell as a result of not being cleaned. We solved the problem by flushing out the tank repeatedly. The toilet bowl was stained yellow. We were told the staining was the result of a cigarette burn. However through regular cleaning and application of bleach, we got rid of all staining. The toilet cassette locker smelt and showed evidence of having previously overflowed. We cleaned it throughly and the smell disappeared. The screen on the passenger door didn’t close properly. We gave up trying to sort that one. The catch on the front windscreen screen fell off early on. The lock on the bed doesn’t work. The lock on the habitation door stopped working. We had to take time from our holiday, to take the Motorhome for repair. The technician told us the problem was due to wear and to dirt and grease on the locks. After traveling, the fridge and the bathroom cabinets, disgorge their contents EVERYTIME I open the doors. This is a particular problem with the fridge as things like yogurt, often spill out onto the floor. Now finally the fridge door handle has broken off completely and we can’t open the fridge. We have emailed Wilderness to report the problem. Our expectation is that we will be told to take the Motorhome to a repair centre. Part of our holiday has been spent as problem fixers for a Wilderness Motorhome. The quality of the internal fixtures are not sufficient to cope with level of usage a rental vehicle is subjected too. Based on our experience, I would not recommend a Burstner Motorhome either as a rental or to purchase.
Our Wilderness motor home was everything they advertised and everything we required. Having decided to invest a little bit more money in our choice of 'home'for 10 days we were not disappointed, the Alpine 2 was spacious and fitted out very well.Customer Service on and off site was engaging and comprehensive.Overall a very positive experience and a company we would recommend
Very easy and efficient service Motorhome was compact but comfortable and had everything we needed for overnight stops but also making lunch and a brew in amazing places
First off all you should be aware that if you get a puncture the cost of the call out is down to you; $165 in our case, and 7 hours waiting at the side of the road. I accept that punctures happen, but the Wilderness policy to charge the unlucky customer who, by chance, is driving the vehicle at the time is flawed in my opinion. It should be factored in to the price of the hire and therefore everyone pays a small amount to cover the unlucky ones. It is worth noting that we had taken out the VIP insurance cover also, but it seems that a puncture isn't covered. Had I have crashed the motorhome and wrote it off we'd have been fine with no charges; go figure.
Secondly, our motorhome cannot have been checked properly prior to pick up, and was old and in need of many repairs. We had to empty the grey water tank at our first stop because the smell was so bad on our initial journey. I would expect as well as the water to be full, the grey water tank to be empty on pick up. The water flap and the power flap were broken and taped down with velcro; this attempted fix didnt work and the flaps flapped around during driving which caused a very annoying noise. The camping table that we paid for had a hole in it, one of the camping chairs had bird mess all over it, And the windscreen wipers made a scraping noise when on for an extended period of time.
On returning the motorhome and pointing out the above issues, Timothy, a manager that we didnt get to speak to, authorised $165 compensation for the puncture. But, as pointed out above it is my opinion that we shouldn't have been liable for this cost in the first instance, which I would have challenged, even if we didn't have all the other issues to deal with.
