I chose Wilson's Abel Tasman 5 day hike because it was one of the few guided hikes with lodging and meals available in October in a national park. The experience was wonderful: we were blessed with beautiful weather, our guides were extremely knowledgeable, the food at Meadowbank and Torrent Bay Lodge was generous and very, very good. In our group there was a variety of ages among the hikers. This contributed to interesting conversations during the hikes and around the dinner table. I would strongly recommend this experience to hikers looking for great walks with beautiful vistas but with the comforts that excellent meals and cosy lodgings provide.

The 5-Day Kayak & Walk that we did in early Feb was a great disappointment. This is an expensive tour that cost us NZ$500 per day, so I have to say certainly not worth the cost. After kayaking all day we were expected to drag the heavy kayaks over the beach because the tide was out at Torrent Bay. I asked why they didn't have their staff do this but that is not the way they do things. Apparently it was just our bad luck. We rarely had a morning or afternoon break although we had been led to believe from the description that we would be stopping at many of the beaches along the coast.

We took the 2 hour Sea Kayaking experience and then a cruise and walk. The Sea Kayaking was superb. We had Sjors as our guide and he was so calm and informative we had a great time. The cruise was less so. We departed at the right time and were picked up on the right beach at the right time, which was good, after a 3 hour walk (unguided) but the trip and the commentary were poor. You could not hear the guide and therefore did not really know where you were or what you were looking at. The walk was great but nothing really to do with Wilson.
