A 1,000 year old rimu. And big.

Access

From the centre of Karamea follow Umere Road 7 km (unsealed for the last 1 km) to the signposted start of the track.

The carpark is on the opposite side of the road.

Track

The firm track climbs gently through regenerating forest to a large rimu tree at the track end.

There are interpretation signs on some of the forest plants.

Flora

The tree is 36 metres high and 2 meters in diameter.

European History

Rimu Dacrydium cupressinum was used as the preferred timber for many European constructions. Some houses had rimu sub floor and frames, rimu rafter, lining, cladding, sarking, joinery, flooring, windows and doors. It has a rich red tone, straight grain, is weather resistant and structurally strong.
