Information

2 hours 30 minutes one-way | 8 km one-way

This coastal walk encompasses all the beauty the Bay of Islands has to offer without the hordes of tourists. It meanders through idyllic bays and looks out to sailing boats moored in the calm clear waters. From barnacle encrusted rocky headlands there are sweeping vistas of the bay. Charming coves are lined with multicoloured tinnies and sprinkled with secluded homes.

Access

The track starts from the Opua Wharf and finishes at the southern end of Paihia Beach, where Marsden Road turns into Seaview Road.

Track

The initial Opua Hall section of the track is closed due to slumping. It is negotiable at low tide or use the Richardson Street entry as your start point.

The track is carved into the banks above the shoreline. It can be slippery when wet and prone to erosion. It skirts numerous small bays and headlands before entering Harrison Scenic Reserve. The track is then shaded and climbs to an elevated position above the headland.

Crossing the Waimangaro River on a boardwalk, it passes through the motor camp. After the next headland it crosses the causeway alongside S.H.1 (Seaview Road) and weaves through Sullivan’s Bay to a stone wharf, finishing at the southern end of Paihia Beach.

Toilets are located at Opua Wharf, the northern end of Seaview Road causeway and the corner of Seaview and Marsden Roads.
